A Platform to Practice
The word 'essay' comes from the French verb 'essayer' which means 'to try'. Nobody is born a brilliant essay writer. Anders Ericsson famously showed that high-level performance in any area is achieved through structured practice. We provide the structure and guidance to create worthwhile student practice.
One Key Area to Improve
Our teachers pinpoint one key area for students to improve, referring to the mark scheme as they do so. This avoids overwhelming students and enables them to practice that specific piece of feedback. Students do not get better simply by knowing what they did wrong; they get better by practicing doing it right. In what is known as a dialogical approach, we encourage students to repeat the same essay type, applying the feedback they just received.
Peer Examples
It‘s one thing telling students how to improve, it‘s another thing showing examples. Whatever the area of improvement is for a student, we show an example from another student who performed strongly in that area.
Voice Recordings
At school, students almost never get the chance to hear a teacher talk through their essay and explain their feedback. Students find it beneficial to hear teachers talk through their approach.
We Never Give Grades
Our focus is not on where students are now, but where they can be. The research is overwhelming that grades distract students from feedback. Counterintuitively, by leaving grades to one side, we give students the best chance of a higher grade.
